Earth Color Workshop
led by artist and naturalist Robin Whitfield
May 22, 2021 10am - 3pm
What is earth color? colors found in the wild. Colors may come from mud, leaves, berries, flower petals, mushrooms or mineral deposits.
Participants will forage for wild plant and mineral materials from the museum campus and pearl river and Lefluers Bluff nature trails. A buffet of raw mineral colors from around the state will be available for processing into uniform pigment powders. Walnut and iron gall inks will be discussed and available alongside an introduction to basic brush and quill making. Creative exercises will lead up to the creation of an earth color mandala on watercolor paper.
A Mandala is a circular symbol representing the universe. Mandalas may be employed for focusing attention and for establishing a sacred space.
